As we roll off an extremely active 2017 hurricane season, with devastating storms like Harvey, Irma, and Maria, and enter a new season, it is imperative that emergency managers be aware of and prepare for the potential of land-falling tropical storms or hurricanes. In a recent article, FEMA Administrator, Brock Long, encouraged local and state organizations to strengthen their capabilities, especially when it comes to immediate commodity needs.
At Knowledge Center (KC), we firmly believe that information, preparation, and having effective communication and incident management systems in place for emergency managers responding to devastating events and natural disasters, like hurricanes, truly make a difference. We have seen first-hand one of the largest for profit healthcare systems in the country use Knowledge Center to prepare for and respond to Hurricane Harvey this past year, with front-line support from our staff. To paint the picture of the power of having an incident management system in place to log, respond to and track the massive amount of information when managing a storm of this magnitude, below are just a few of the incident statistics that were entered into their KC System:
- 1499 Log Entries
- 439 Page IAP
- 129 Documents Uploaded
- 13 Missions Resulting in over 50 individual Helicopter flights to move staff and supplies
- 31 Patient Evacuations via Multi-Leg Multi-Mode Aircraft Transport
Whether an emergency manager or citizen preparing for or reacting to a disaster, the Knowledge Center team is committed to making a difference when seconds matter!
